ADX (Wilder) in the Trade Rule Block

ADX (Wilder) is the original Welles Wilder version of the ADX, measuring trend strength and direction.

Purpose of ADX (Wilder)

ADX (Wilder) is the original version of the Average Directional Index as described by J. Welles Wilder, using his own smoothing method. Like the standard ADX, it measures trend strength with the Main Line and trend direction with the +DI and −DI lines. Its values can differ slightly from the standard ADX because of the different smoothing.

How It Works

When you select ADX (Wilder) in the Trade Rule block, you can configure it with the following settings:

Period of ADX (Wilder)

  • The number of candles used for the calculation.

  • Example: A period of 14 uses the last 14 candles (Wilder's standard setting).

Mode of ADX (Wilder) (Which line to use)

  • Main Line: The ADX line, showing trend strength (0 to 100).

  • +DI: The positive directional line, showing upward movement.

  • −DI: The negative directional line, showing downward movement.

Time Frame of ADX (Wilder)

  • Sets the chart time frame for the ADX (Wilder) calculation.

  • Can be replaced with a variable or input for quick testing and optimization.

Candle ID of ADX (Wilder)

  • Defines which candle the calculation starts from.

  • 0: Current candle (still forming).

  • 1: Most recently closed candle.

  • Higher IDs refer to older candles.

Adjust of ADX (Wilder) (Modify the Result)

  • Apply an adjustment to the calculated value by adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing by a number.

Example

If you set:

  • Period: 14

  • Mode: +DI

  • Candle ID: 1

You get the +DI value of the most recently closed candle, showing the strength of upward movement.

Use Cases

  • Filter trades so they only open in strong trends (for example ADX above 25).

  • Compare +DI with −DI to decide between buying and selling.

  • Use it when you want results that match Wilder's original calculation.

⚠ Tip: If you are used to the standard ADX in other platforms, check which version they use. Choose ADX (Wilder) to match Wilder's original method.

⚠ Note: When you use Crosses Above or Crosses Below with this indicator, the cross is currently calculated on its first line, whatever Mode you select. To compare two specific lines, use > or < instead.
