How to import Tick Data into Metatrader 5 (Mac)

Importing historical Tick Data into Metatrader 5 on your Mac device for running high-quality backtests

1. Download Tick Data

Get your tick data file from your source.
Save it in your Downloads folder on your Mac.


2. Open MetaTrader 5

Launch MetaTrader 5.
Press Ctrl + U (or click the $ (symbols) icon in the top bar).


3. Create a Custom Symbol

In the Symbols window → click on Forex.
Find the pair you want to import data for (e.g., EURUSD).
Click the pair once to select it.
Click Create Custom Symbol.
Change its name → e.g., EURUSD.tick (or any name you like).
Click OK.


4. Select Custom Symbol

In the Symbols list, switch from Forex → Custom.
Find the symbol name you just created (EURUSD.tick).
Select it once.

5. Import Tick Data

Go to the Ticks tab.
Click Import Ticks.
Click Browse → My Computer → Z: drive.
Navigate to: Z: → Users → [Your Mac Username] → Downloads
Select your tick data file.
Click OK → Import begins.

6. Add Symbol to Market Watch

In the Custom Symbols list, double-click your new symbol (EURUSD.tick).
It will appear in Market Watch.
Now you can use it for back-testing in the Strategy Tester.
